Skin cancer basics

• Cells will multiply to form a mass known as a tumor.
• If tumors are malignant they are cancerous. They will invade and encroach neighboring cells, because of loss of control of their growth.
• Cancercan travel to remote organs with the help of the blood stream. The process of spreading and invading to other organs is known as metastasis.
• Tumors will overwhelm its neighboring tissue by invading their space and taking nutrients and oxygen to function and survive.

What are the three major types of skin cancer?

There are three types of skin cancer.
• Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC)
• Basal cell carcinoma (BCC)
• Melanoma

The first two types are non-melanoma skin cancers. Unusual types of cancer will include Merkel cell tumors and dermatofibrosarcoma protuberant.

Most skin cancer will be basal cell carcinoma orsquamous cell carcinomas. These are unlikely in spreading to other parts of the body. They may locally disfigure if not treated at an early stage.
Skin cancers can be malignant melanomas. This can be a highly aggressive cancer and tend to spread to other parts of the body. These cancers can turn out to fatal if not treated at an early stage.
Skin cancer will start as precancerous lesions like many other cancers. These are the changes in the skin that are not cancer but can become cancer over time. These changes are referred by medical professionals as dysplasia.
